Skin Rejuvenation

Chemical Peel

WHAT IS A CHEMICAL PEEL?

Chemical peels are topically applied acids that aid in the restoration and rejuvenation of the skin’s surface. They create a uniform and controlled shedding of several layers of the skin. Depending on the nature and depth of the peel, a significant number of layers can be exfoliated, allowing new growth to be exposed, and creating a fresh, vibrant appearance.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Chemical peels can enhance your appearance by reducing blotchy and uneven pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, freckling, age spots, sun-damaged skin, and acne scars in a relatively brief measure of time. Chemical peels accelerate the production of new cells. Enjoy fresh, smooth skin - immediately after your first treatment.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

Chemical peels have become increasingly popular because of the array of advantages and relative lack of complications. Side effects are rare and usually temporary. Some side effects include uneven pigmentation, redness, and very infrequent scarring if the skin is not cared for appropriately. Sun protection is crucial to minimize the risk of side effects. A treatment program of individually suited products and sun protection will benefit your skin’s ability to maintain the peel results. You can decrease the likelihood of side effects by carefully following your doctor's instructions.

TYPES OF CHEMICAL PEELS

  • Superficial Peel - This peel is designed to help smoothen coarse, dry skin, improve the texture of sun-damaged skin, and even skin tone. The recovery is generally rapid and usually involves some minor flaking. A series of treatments is ordinarily recommended to obtain the desired result over a period of time. Typically there is no downtime, and with appropriate sun protection, you can resume regular activities immediately.
  • Medium Peel - This peel contains a stronger potency of acids. Medium peels target the epidermis and upper dermis and cause the skin to slough within 5 to 7 days. Immediately after treatment, the skin has a red appearance and is occasionally accompanied by swelling. Within a day, the skin turns brown, and after 3 or 4 days, the skin initiates the peeling process.
  • Deep Peel - This peel produces the most dramatic results. It is recommended for treating wrinkles, scars, blemishes, and, in some cases, precancerous skin lesions. A deep peel targets the dermis. In some cases, anesthesia is required during the procedure to reduce the warm-to-hot stinging sensation. After a deep peel, the skin is red and can result in some swelling and blistering. A crust may form, and the skin will turn brown just before peeling. Many layers of the skin will peel over a period of one to two weeks. An ointment may be given to keep the area moist. Temporarily, the new skin will have the color and sensation of significant sunburn, gradually fading to your normal skin color.

Microdermabrasion

With this treatment, the handpiece gently traces over your skin, delivering sterile micro-crystals that gently exfoliate your skin. Simultaneously, a vacuum whisks away the exfoliated skin and excess crystal, making your face smoother. The treatment takes between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on the body area you want to be treated.

Your skin's rejuvenated, smooth and softened appearance is visible from your first treatment. Typically a series of 4 to 10 treatments, followed by a maintenance program, is required to reach and sustain the desired goal.

Wrinkle Reduction

We have many ways to minimize the appearance of wrinkles, from lotions and creams to lasers and treatments such as Botox® and Restylane®.

Here is a summary of the ways we can help.

Botox®

A Botox® Cosmetic treatment is a simple, non-surgical procedure that smoothes the deep, persistent lines between your brows that developed over time. One ten-minute treatment - a few tiny injections - relaxes the muscles that cause those lines to form and keeps them relaxed up to four months. The results are dramatic and apparent within days. In clinical trials, nearly 90% of men and women rated the improvement in their brow lines as moderate to better. For many, Botox® Cosmetic virtually "erases" these lines.

BOTOX® COSMETIC

Everybody is talking about Botox® Cosmetic, the highly effective non-surgical procedure that dramatically reduces your most challenging wrinkle within seven days and lasts up to four months.

SO WHAT IS BOTOX® COSMETIC?

Unlike surgery, Botox® Cosmetic is fast, simple, and minimally invasive, with no downtime or recovery. Most people return directly to work or regular activity following treatment. Within days, they report looking more natural and relaxed.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM BOTOX® COSMETIC:

Your doctor will determine where to administer several tiny injections to achieve the best results. No anesthesia is required, although they may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream before injecting. The entire procedure takes approximately ten minutes. Discomfort is minimal and brief - most patients compare the sensation to a bug bite. It is unlikely you will develop significant side effects, although some people develop slight temporary bruising at the injection site, which can easily be covered by makeup. You may resume regular activity immediately. Within days you'll see a marked improvement which may continue to improve for as long as a week and should last up to four months.

Restylane®

Restylane® is a long-lasting cosmetic filler that dramatically improves the appearance of facial lines, wrinkles, and folds. This is a non-surgical solution to soften facial lines and wrinkles, restore volume and fullness to the skin, plump up lips, and fill in scars. Restylane® injected into the lips can give back fullness to lips that have receded. The cosmetic results are immediately visible, bestowing you with a more youthful and invigorated look.

DRAMATICALLY SMOOTHER SKIN WITHOUT SURGERY:

Facial lines and wrinkles are caused by a gradual breakdown of the body's collagen and the elastin fibers in the skin. No one is immune from experiencing this normal aging process. Squinting, frowning, and smiling also inflict stress on the underlying collagen in the skin and accelerate the formation of these furrows. Until recently, injectable collagen was the most widely used cosmetic filler to improve the appearance of these lines.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A RESTYLANE® TREATMENT?

  • Immediately you will discern a smoothing of the wrinkles and folds
  • Restylane® will impart lift and a new firmness to your skin
  • With lip enhancement, the results will be a noticeably fuller and more sensuous contour
  • You don't need to be tested for skin sensitivity
  • The cosmetic results are visible immediately, bestowing you with a more youthful and invigorated look
  • When the effect of the treatment begins to diminish, you can replenish the area as needed

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT LIKE?

Restylane® is injected in small amounts under your skin to fill creases, lines, wrinkles, or folds. It is also injected around the lip area to create volume, resulting in a more youthful appearance. A skin test is not necessary prior to treatment, so treatment can be performed at any time. In order to optimize your comfort, the treatment area may be anesthetized with a topical cream or anesthetic block. Treatment results are immediately evident.

HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS LAST?

Depending on many factors, such as your lifestyle, age, and skin structure, your results may last as long as six months to a year or more. You may require a touch-up treatment 2-4 weeks after the first treatment to achieve your desired result. Treatment to enhance the lips is reported to last much longer than standard collagen filler treatment. When the effect of the treatment begins to diminish, you can replenish the area as needed.

HOW IS RESTYLANE® DIFFERENT FROM COLLAGEN?

Restylane® has been demonstrated to last much longer than the standard bovine collagen injection. The occurrence of an allergic reaction is extremely rare due to the product's non-animal associated basis. Unlike injectable collagen filler made of bovine protein, which can cause an allergic reaction in some patients, Restylane® is a natural substance, hyaluronic acid, which is a sugar molecule already present naturally in the human body. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane® is similar to that found throughout your body, giving the skin volume and fullness. It is both biodegradable and compatible with human hyaluronic acid. Because of this compatibility, you don't need to be tested for skin sensitivity.

Sculptra®

WHAT IS SCULPTRA®?

Sculptra® is injected into the skin for restoration and/or correction of facial fat loss signs. Sculptra® is a synthetic injectable material known as "poly-L-lactic acid." It is biocompatible (a material that does not harm the body) and biodegradable (able to be broken down by the body). It has also been widely used in dissolvable stitches, soft tissue implants, and other types of implants.

HOW LONG DO SCULPTRA® TREATMENT RESULTS LAST?

Treatment results will differ for each person. In a clinical study, treatment results lasted up to 2 years after the first treatment session in most patients. Touch-up treatments may be needed to maintain the desired effect.

ARE THE RESULTS FROM SCULPTRA® IMMEDIATE?

At the first treatment visit, it may appear that Sculptra® worked immediately because of swelling from the injections and the water used to dilute Sculptra®. In a few days, when the swelling goes down, and the body absorbs water, the treated area may look as it did before treatment. Sculptra® takes time to gradually correct depressions in the skin.

HOW MANY SCULPTRA® TREATMENTS ARE REQUIRED?

The number of treatment sessions and the amount of Sculptra® needed at each session will differ for each person. Patients with moderate facial fat loss may require three treatment sessions with at least two weeks between sessions. Patients with severe facial fat loss may require 4 to 5 treatment sessions with at least two weeks between sessions.

Lasers

PhotoRejuvenation is a series of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments that improve the appearance of Rosacea, flushing and sun-damaged skin, age spots, skin texture, and photoaging. Treatment also improves the appearance of mild acne scars, reduces large pores, corrects dark circles around the eyes, and reduces fine lines.

Age Spots

Also known as 'sun spots,' these brownish spots appear on your face and body as a result of overexposure to the sun. The more your skin is exposed to the sun, the more spots will develop, regardless of age. As you probably already know, tanning is not healthy and will also lead to premature wrinkles.

How do we treat them?

The best way to treat age spots is with lasers. The process is simple and generally causes the spots to disappear completely. Any pain is minimal and brief.

How long does a treatment session take?

Depending on the number of treatment areas, the process can take 10 to 30 minutes.

Please contact our office for more information on age spots or to schedule an appointment.

Melasma

Millions of women suffer from this skin condition. They feel embarrassed, unattractive, and old. Many use cosmetics to cover their dark, brown spots and do not know that there is a prescription medicine that can fade their melasma!

What exactly is melasma?

Melasma is a natural darkening of the skin caused by excessive production of melanin - the pigment that causes your skin to tan. The sun, which increases melanin production, usually makes your melasma worse. Melasma only occurs on the areas of your skin that are exposed to the sun.

What treatments are available to fade my melasma?

Fortunately, you don't have to live with melasma. Different prescription and over-the-counter products can be used alone or in combination to treat melasma. And there is a triple-combination product that your dermatologist can prescribe to lighten your moderate to severe melasma quickly.

Tri-Luma® Cream is a unique medicine because it combines three effective ingredients into one formula, giving you a single, once-a-day product to put on your face at bedtime.

Spider Veins

Spider veins are small dilated blood vessels near the surface of the skin. They can develop anywhere on the body but are commonly seen on the face and the legs.

Please contact our office for more information on how to minimize and remove spider veins or schedule an appointment.

Even after one peel, you will notice an improvement in your skin's texture and tone, lessening fine lines, and a healthier, more youthful appearance. Dramatic results are achieved with a series of peels. The Vitalize Peel has been clinically proven to help pigmentation problems (such as age spots) fade and stimulate collagen production. Skin Rejuvenation

We offer several very effective ways to help you look your best:

PHOTOREJUVENATION

PhotoRejuvenation is a series of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments that improve the appearance of Rosacea, flushing and sun-damaged skin, age spots, skin texture, and photoaging. Treatment also improves the appearance of mild acne scars, reduces large pores, corrects dark circles around the eyes, and reduces fine lines. Additionally, this exhilarating treatment involves little to no ‘downtime.’

How does it work?

An intense light is applied as a series of gentle pulses to the treatment area. Without damaging the skin, the light penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the abnormally dilated vessels or pigmentation. Heat then impairs the target vessels or lesions, and the body begins a natural healing process. Lesions darken before they flake off or are absorbed by the body. Treatment can take place as frequently as every three weeks.

How many treatments will I need?

For optimal results, a series of five treatments is recommended. Some patients see significant improvement with two to three treatments, while others might require more. Follow-up treatments may be needed once a year to maintain desired results.

Wrinkle Reduction

We have many ways to minimize the appearance of wrinkles.

Treatment also improves the appearance of mild acne scars, reduces large pores, corrects dark circles around the eyes, and reduces fine lines.

Mixto® - CO2 Fractional Revolution

Using a complex algorithm, Mixto delivers a precise matrix of Microspots that penetrate the dermis and stimulate new collagen formation. At the same time, immediate shrinkage of damaged tissue is achieved.

What can it do for you? Immediate contraction of collagen fibers reduces wrinkles and loose skin. Removes pigmentation problems and reduces pore size, wrinkles, acne scars, and other textural irregularities. The Mixto technique also makes the healing process much quicker and enables patients to return to their normal lifestyle sooner.

Hair Removal

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment for unwanted hair is a non-invasive approach to permanent reduction and long-term hair removal. Treatment is designed to eliminate undesired hair from all body parts. Unlike many other treatment methods, IPL leaves your skin looking and feeling smoother and softer.

INTENSE PULSED LIGHT (IPL)

IPL treatment for unwanted hair is a non-invasive approach to permanent reduction and long-term hair removal. Treatment is designed to eliminate undesired hair from all body parts. Unlike many other treatment methods, IPL leaves your skin looking and feeling smoother and softer.

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT LIKE?

Preliminary setup requires cleansing and shaving of the area to be treated. The IPL therapy produces a beam of highly concentrated light. Without damaging the surrounding tissue, controlled light pulses penetrate the skin and are absorbed by the hair follicles. The heat discourages and ultimately destroys the potential for regrowth. Post-treatment procedures include cleansing of the treated area and application of sunblock. Large areas such as backs, shoulders, abdomens, and legs can be treated rapidly. Facial areas such as the lip, chin, and beard can be treated in minutes.

IS IT PAINFUL?

This procedure is tolerated well by most patients, as the laser functions so quickly that only a mild sting is felt. Local anesthesia or pain medication is not required, but a topical anesthetic is an option for more sensitive areas.

What types of laser treatments does your practice offer?

Our practices offer an array of laser treatments to address different issues, including:

  • Photorejuvenation using intense pulsed light (IPL) to reduce the appearance of age spots, Rosacea, hyperpigmentation (flushing or redness), large pores, mild scarring, fine lines, and sun damage, as well as improve the texture of the skin
  • Nonsurgical spider vein treatments to remove unsightly bluish veins and improve circulation
  • IPL for hair removal from all parts of the body

How does photorejuvenation work? What issues can be treated?

Photorejuvenation uses intense pulsed light (IPL) emitted through the skin using the MiXto SX® laser. As the micro-fractional CO2 laser reaches areas of damaged tissue, it stimulates the skin to produce new, healthy tissue, making it appear more youthful. MiXto SX also helps activate and tighten collagen to reduce the appearance of pores and fine lines while also improving skin texture and helping skin feel and look firmer.

The state-of-the-art MiXto SX system gets you the desired results in a short 30-minute session. You should notice an immediate improvement after your first treatment. The laser can improve the appearance of your:

  • Pores
  • Acne scars
  • Dark circles around the eyes
  • Facial lines and wrinkles
  • Sun damaged skin
  • Age spots
  • Overall skin texture
  • Skin flushing and Rosacea

What happens during laser hair removal?

Before treatment, the hair in the area is shaved, and the skin is carefully cleansed. Energy is delivered through the skin using a special handpiece passed over the treatment area. During treatment, you may experience a mild stinging sensation similar to the snap of a rubber band. Topical numbing agents can be used to reduce discomfort in very sensitive areas. In addition to removing unwanted hair, IPL also improves skin texture, so skin feels smoother, softer, and sexier.

Injectables Specialist

BOTOX®, Restylane®, RHA, and Sculptra are some of the most popular cosmetic treatments in the US among both men and women, helping to reduce lines and wrinkles in your face. The Skin and Laser Medical Centers offer state-of-the-art treatments to help patients in Redlands and Victorville, CA, achieve superior results.

How do injectables work?

BOTOX® is a formulary made by a small amount of the bacterium Clostridium botulinum that works by interrupting the nerve signals that travel between the brain and the facial muscles. These signals cause muscles to contract and tighten as a result of facial expressions. As the muscles contract, they tug on the skin and form lines (also called dynamic wrinkles). Over time, these lines can become very deep and noticeable. By interrupting these nerve signals, muscles become relaxed and deep lines and creases become far less noticeable.

Restylane® is a type of hyaluronic acid, which is a substance found naturally in your body. Hyaluronic acid attracts moisture, leaving your skin smoother and more elastic. Because Restylane® works with hyaluronic acid already found in your body, many patients start seeing results immediately, with continued improvement over the days following treatment.

Where are injectables used on the body?

BOTOX® and Restylane® can treat crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes, forehead lines, and frown lines -- those pesky, deep wrinkles that form between the brows. They are also beneficial for lifting and smoothing your cheeks and lines around your mouth. Many patients find these treatments are especially effective in reducing the signs of aging and restoring a more youthful appearance.

What happens during a treatment?

Before injection, a careful evaluation of the facial anatomy will determine the best needle placement for optimal results. Most treatments use several carefully placed injections to ensure the BOTOX® or Restylane® is spread consistently throughout the treatment area. The needles are fine, and most patients experience little to no discomfort. A mild numbing cream or an ice pack may be applied to the skin before treatment to reduce any discomfort. Once the injections are complete, there may be some minor bruising that can be covered with makeup. Injectable treatments are performed right in the office in about 10 minutes, and there’s no minimal time so that patients can return to most of their regular activities immediately afterward.

When can I expect results?

Initial results usually are visible within a few days to a week, and results last up to 4-6 months. With touch-up treatments, effects can persist indefinitely, and some patients find repeated injections soften the lines and creases, enabling them to wait a little longer between treatments.

Can BOTOX® be used along with Restylane®?

Probably yes -- it just depends on the area. Some patients opt to have both BOTOX® and Restylane® injections to treat wrinkles and lines, providing many of the same effects as a facelift but without the pain, risks, prolonged recovery time, and high cost of surgery. Usually, this combination is most beneficial for your lip and mouth area.

Dermal Fillers Specialist

Dermal fillers can provide an ideal solution for lines and wrinkles in the lower two-thirds of the face and for restoring volume in the cheeks, lips, and other areas. Dr. Steven E. Hodgkin and his qualified team of MDs, PAs, and nurses at the Skin and Laser Medical Centers offer cosmetic fillers like Restylane®, RHA, and Sculptra®, to help patients in Redlands and Victorville, CA, look more refreshed and more youthful.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable products that are used to reduce or eliminate the appearance of lines, wrinkles, and creases and to “plump up” sunken areas in the cheeks or to fill out thin lips. Many cosmetic fillers are available to address different issues in different areas of the face. Fillers treat so-called static wrinkles, lines, and creases resulting from sun damage, photoaging, gravity, genetics, and similar factors. Wrinkles and lines caused by facial expressions (such as crow’s feet and frown lines) are called dynamic wrinkles and are better treated with BOTOX®. Fillers can be especially effective in reducing the appearance of nasolabial folds and “marionette” lines that form around the nose, lips, and chin. They can also be effective in gently lifting the lower portion of the face when injected into the cheek areas.

What types of fillers do you offer?

We offer several different types of cosmetic fillers to help patients get the results they want, including:

  • RHA, made from hyaluronic acid, a natural material that helps skin retain moisture, so it looks and feels plumper
  • Restylane®, a long-lasting filler that also uses hyaluronic acid and can help restore plumpness and volume in the cheeks and lips
  • Sculptra®, a cosmetic filler that uses a special biocompatible and biodegradable substance called poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) to provide longer-lasting results and increased firmness
